The Leica II was first introduced in 1932 and represented the first of the Barnack Leica cameras to have a built-in rangefinder. As would become standard with all later Leica M39 cameras, the Leica II has a coupled focusing rangefinder in one window, and a separate viewfinder window designed for proper framing with a standard 50mm lens. Using lenses with different focal lengths required using a separate viewfinder.
Compared to its successor, the Leica III, the Leica II lacks a separate shutter speed dial for speeds slower than 1/20th of a second. However, the camera remained in production until 1948, with more than 53,000 units produced.
With its simple styling and solid build, the Leica II is a worthy asset for any film photographer. Despite being a creation of the 20th century, it can hold its own against any modern cameras in feel, and easily surpasses them in cool factor.
